London, England (CNN) -- Singer Amy Winehouse was charged Wednesday in connection with an assault at a theater last week, Thames Valley police said.

Winehouse, 26, was charged under the name Amy Civil with a "public order offense and common assault," authorities said in a news release. Winehouse was divorced from her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, earlier this year.

Winehouse went to the police station voluntarily with her attorney on Wednesday and was arrested. She is scheduled to appear in court on January 20.

The incident occurred Saturday night at Milton Keynes Theatre, authorities said. The town of Milton Keynes is about 55 miles northwest of London.

Winehouse is famous for her retro, soulful R&B sound and has had a string of hits including "Rehab," "Back to Black" and "Tears Dry on Their Own."
