Hackers Spread Virus Through Bogus Vaccine Website

Friday, December 4, 2009

Hackers are spreading a computer virus by sending out emails urging people to visit a fake website offering vaccines for the swine flu.

Researchers from security firms Symantec Corp and AppRiver said, "The email purports to be from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, directing them to what looks like an official government website to fill out a vaccination form."

Researchers said on Tuesday they began seeing millions of spam emails as part of a plan to infect computers with this vicious virus.

The bogus site automatically downloads the software onto the victim's computer.

Once into the PC, the hackers can use a machine to commit identity theft, attack other PCs or turn the computer into a spam server.

Hackers typically base their scams on issues that are in the top news. Lately the attacks have been linked to Tiger Wood's car crash and the holiday shopping season.
